Learning Outcome: LO1. I know local Artisanship and materials.

1. I can name some traditional areas of local artisanship.

  • Traditions in artisanship:


  • Pottery/ceramic; e.g. Earthenware pottery, mosaic, Maltese tiles;

  • Wood/plant based; e.g. Maltese clock, Marquetry, Qoffa;

  • Clothing/textiles; e.g. Bizzilla, Rakkmu, hansa;

  • Parchment/paper; e.g. Quilling/paper filigree, parchment crafts, embossing;



2. I can identify the steps to local artisan production techniques.

• Techniques:

  • Pottery/ceramics: e.g. firing, mosaicking, hand building, glazing;

  • Wood/plant based: e.g. carving, inlay, staining, basket weaving;

  • Clothing/Textiles: e.g. weaving, hansa, applique, lace making;

  • Parchment/paper: e.g. quilling, embossing, book binding, gilding.


3. I can discover some properties for a range of materials.

  • Characteristics and properties: e.g. flexibility, insulator/conductor, malleability, compression, tension, elasticity, toughness/durability, absorbency.

Learning Outcome: LO2. I know some research and design strategies ​

4. I can identify different design strategies that can be used by artisans.

  • Strategies: e.g. customer oriented design, product oriented design, design for product positioning and scope, integrating branding and image design;

5. I can recognise how market research can help improve business for local artisans.

  • Market research helps by identifying: e.g. customer trends and demand, competitors in the market, gaps in the market, opportunities and developments within the industry;

2 I can discuss different market research methods and their outcomes.

  • Market research methods: e.g. internet research tools, surveys and questionnaires, consumer testing, published statistics and report, maps and business demographics, Government and trade associations;



Learning Outcome: LO3. I can develop an artisan product suitable for a viable business/enterprise.

6. I can identify current technologies that can be used for the design and production process.

  • Technologies/digital tools: computer aided design software and apps; digital cameras, digital scanners and printers; computer aided manufacturing;

7. I can identify some of the different CAD software used to present ideas.

  • CAD software: Auto CAD; Adobe Photoshop; Adobe illustrator; Google Sketchup;

3. I can discuss the process local artisan should use to create a sustainably viable and innovative product, service or business.

Process: market research to find targets and keep up to date. Idea generation and design development for innovative ideas; analysis and testing to solve problems; planning and preparing for most efficiency; branding and marketing for financial success; efficient customer care to gain good reputation and customer satisfaction.
1. I can produce a design project for a viable product/business.

  • Design and produce a viable product/business: appropriate research and design analysis; clear plans and design developments for viable product/business; accurate graphical representations; solving of problems through tests and experiments; use’s production methods skilfully and responsibly.



Learning Outcome: LO4. I know how to set up a viable artisan business or enterprise.

8. I can list some business/enterprises opportunities for entrepreneurs.


  • Enterprise: e.g. exhibitions, workshop, shop, a customised design and production services;

  • Business: self-employed; freelance; sole trader; a partnership or a limited company.


9. I can identify the important steps to set up a business/enterprise for success.

  • Steps: market research; business plan; find premises; find suppliers; follow laws and regulations; raising finances; marketing; accounting.

4. I can discuss the necessary requirements to set up a business.


  • Requirements: e.g.

    • Important documentation required for banks and government bodies;

    • The important governing bodies to contact;

    • The important laws and legislations to follow: e.g. health and safety, copy write, data protection;

    • How to find and complete documents: business plan, tax forms, accounts.



2. I can work collaboratively to set up a simulated artisan business/enterprise.


  • Business/Enterprise maybe: exhibition or fair or online shop or website.

  • Work collaboratively: discuss and work with others; show responsibility; shows consideration and respect to others; contributes to group work and discussions; contributes to the project at each stage; communicates appropriately; carries out individual responsibilities; abides by rules and regulations; shows some independence and initiative; see’s the project through to the end.   




Learning Outcome: LO5. I know how to market or brand an artisan product or service. ​

10. I can identify some steps required to build a personal or product based brand.

  • Steps: conduct research and know the market; create catchy name/slogan and logo design; create appropriate visuals for adverting: collect and act on customer feedback;

5. I can discuss the effectiveness of different marketing strategies.

  • Strategies: mail marketing; internet and website; personal interactions and calling; social media; TV and radio advertisements; printed advertising, flyers and posters;

3. I can work collaboratively to complete a branding/marketing project for a chosen artisan business/enterprise.

  • Projects might be: e.g. creating various printed or digital branding or promotional/marketing materials.

  • Work collaboratively: discuss and work with others; shows responsibility; shows consideration and respect to others; contributes to group work and discussions; contributes to the project; communicates appropriately; carries out individual responsibilities; abides by rules and regulations; shows some independence and initiative; see’s the project through to the end.
