Learning Area Outcome: I can reflect upon and explore my Maltese identity and the relationships between diversity and identity in Malta, Europe and the world. I can think critically and creatively about everyday problems in local contexts and also about large scale global problems.

Subject Focus: The Business Environment

1] I can differentiate between the needs and wants of a society and can identify how these are satisfied through business activity.
2] I can distinguish between the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy.
3] I can describe the difference between the public and private sectors of an economy and can identify their differing objectives.
4] I can identify and explain the differing objectives of private and public sector businesses.



Learning Area Outcome: I can understand how learning about the humanities can enrich my experience and understanding of the world and how it can be of value throughout my life.

Subject Focus: Entrepreneurship

1] I can explain the role and qualities of the entrepreneur.
2] I can list the factors which encourage entrepreneurship.
3] I can describe the functions of a number of entities in Malta that support and regulate business activity, namely:

  • Employment and Training Corporation

  • Malta Financial Services Authority

  • Malta Enterprise

  • Department of Commerce

  • Consumer Authority


4] I can outline the services that commercial banks provide to businesses.
5] I can prepare a simple business plan and can explain its importance.
6] I can identify the reasons and importance of having a business plan.
7] I can appreciate research and development as an essential tool in the development and progress of business activity.
8] I can carry out basic desk and field research.
9] I can give examples of product development as a result of successful research.
10] I can work in a team and can communicate effectively. 
11] I can explain the process of communication and the importance of effective internal and external communication.
12] I can identify appropriate ways of communication to prevent communication problems.

Subject Focus: ​Financial and Economic Literacy

1] I can explain how the unlimited wants of people cause scarcity of resources.
2] I can discuss how scarcity affects the allocation of resources and the opportunity cost of such choices.
3] I can understand the opportunity cost resulting from specific business choices.
4] I can list and explain the personal services that a commercial bank has to offer and the benefits of using such services.
5] I can differentiate between personal income and personal expenditure.
6] I can prepare a bank account or cash account using the concept of monetary inflow and outflow and can balance it off periodically.
7] I can interpret the terms and figures in a bank statement.
8] I can explain terms relating to personal budgeting such as overspending, saving, contingency planning, contributing towards the community and the notion of credit.
9] I can prepare a personal budget taking into consideration my expected income, expenditure and any credit repayments that I may have.
 CREATIVE LEARNING
10] I can discuss why certain business risks have to be taken from time to time.
11] I can distinguish between insurable and non-insurable business risks.

Subject Focus: Business Structure and Organisation

1] I can distinguish between unlimited and limited liability.
2] I can describe the basic structure and key features of various business organisations namely:
sole proprietors, partnerships, limited liability companies, co-operatives, franchises, public corporations, government departments, local authorities and private-public partnerships.
3] I can explain the role of the government in business activities within mixed economic systems.
4] I can discuss why businesses can be nationalised or privatisated.
5] I can interpret an organisation chart.
6] I can describe the different styles of management and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each.
7] I can explain the Top Down and Bottom Up approaches to management.

Subject Focus: Elements of Business Activity

1] I can identify the functions of the purchasing department within a business organisation.
2] I can explain the principles underlying the process of choosing suppliers.
3] I can explain why businesses need to have a sound stock management system.
4] I can explain the processes involved in production and the different production methods.
5] I can explain economies and diseconomies of large scale production.
6] I can explain the impact of the introduction or increase of automation in a business organisation.
7] I can discuss how businesses may become more environmentally friendly through sustainable production.

8] I can identify various factors which determine the choice of where a business organisation should be located including planning regulations.

1] I can outline the recruitment process.
2] I can prepare a job description and a job specification.
3] I can identify different media that can be used for job advertising.
4] I can prepare a CV, letter of application and can fill in a sample application form.
5] I can explain what preparing for an interview entails, both from the perspective of the employer and that of the employee.  
6] I can list the main features of an employment contract.
7] I can list and discuss the basic conditions of employment as specified under Maltese law.
8] I can explain the importance of training and can come up with different forms of training.
9] I can discuss the meaning and importance of motivation at the place of work through financial and non-financial methods.
10] I can explain the different ways through which employment can be legally terminated and can prepare a letter of resignation.
11] I can make a list of some of the duties and rights of both employers and employees.

8] I can explain the manner in which prices are established through the forces of demand and supply and I can plot a linear demand and supply schedule and can establish the equilibrium price therein.
9] I can explain the different pricing strategies used by a business.

12] I can distinguish between wholesale trade and retail trade and can list the functions of each.
13] I can make a list of the different forms of retail outlets.
