Learning Area Outcome: I can reflect upon and explore my Maltese identity and the relationships between diversity and identity in Malta, Europe and the world. I can think critically and creatively about everyday problems in local contexts and also about large scale global problems.

Subject Focus: The Business Environment

1] I can identify the different types of stakeholders and explain why they may have an interest in a particular business activity.
2] I can discuss why some stakeholders may have conflicting interests.
3] I can explain the importance of international trade.
4] I can explain the difference between a trade deficit and a trade surplus.
5] I can list difficulties that local businesses face when it comes to trading with other countries.
6] I can list the strengths that local businesses have when trading with other countries, referencing Malta’s membership in the European Union and the Eurozone.
7] I can identify the role of protectionism within the international economy.
8] I can explain the role of multinationals and can evaluate their effect on the local economy.
9] I can explain the meaning of fair trade and its importance within the globalised world.

Subject Focus: ​Financial and Economic Literacy

1] I can explain the meaning and importance of consumer protection.
2] I can come up with examples of good/bad practices related to consumer protection.
3] I am aware of the pitfalls of credit.

Subject Focus: Elements of Business Activity

1] I can distinguish between the capital and revenue expenditure of a business organisation.
2] I can explain the reasons for preparing financial reports and can identify their main users.
3] I can interpret figures in a given and simple Income Statement and Statement of Financial Position of a sole trader.
4] I can assess a business’ performance through the calculation and basic interpretation of the following accounting ratios:

  • Gross Profit and Net Profit Margins

  • Return on Capital Employed

  • Working Capital Ratio

  • Quick Assets Ratio

  • Inventory Turnover Ratio


5] I can explain the reasons why businesses need to be financed.
6] I can distinguish between the different sources of finance available to businesses.
7] I can discuss the suitability of different types of financing in relation to particular situations.
8] I can distinguish between the different types of costs incurred by a business.
9] I can explain how businesses use cost and revenue information.
10] I can identify the costs of using different types of business financing options.
11] I can calculate the break-even point of production and explain its uses and limitations.
12] I can explain the meaning of shares and debentures and their role in financing limited liability companies.

1] I can outline the role, aims and importance of Trade Unions.
2] I can differentiate between different types of Trade Unions.
3] I can describe the processes involved in an industrial dispute and the actions that may be taken by trade unions.
4] I can explain how an industrial dispute can be resolved through either arbitration or conciliation.
