Learning Area: Visual and Performing Arts

Learning Area Outcome: I value my background and everyday experiences as sources of inspiration and can relate the visual arts to my immediate environment; ​I am able to draw on my curiosity, imagination and divergent thinking processes to pose questions and explore ideas, spaces, materials and technologies; I can apply skills and dispositions such as goal setting, working independently and collaboratively, showing initiative, experimentation and adaptability

Subject Focus: Encouraging the personal and collaborative responses of the learner: promoting curiosity, exploration, experimentation and invention.

1] I can carry out sustained visual studies, observing and recording, in my local environment.

Learning Area Outcome: I understand how to employ basic ethical decision-making when reflecting on my own and others’ art works and when creating art works that involve the intellectual and cultural property rights of others; I can interpret a variety of artistic forms, recognising and evaluating traditional, historical and contemporary works and identifying possible meanings; I understand the role of the visual arts in fostering lifelong learning. I am also aware of professional arts companies, galleries, museums, cultural organisations and creative adults, in Malta and the wider world, and their role in achieving such learning.

Subject Focus: Interpreting and Evaluating Art.

1] I can confidently use a wide range of research sources, including the internet, to find and extract information to inform my visual investigations.

2] I can use extended art and design vocabulary to fully describe and analyse features of artworks that I see and create.
WRITING
3] I can confidently express reasoned judgements about my own work and that of others, demonstrating contextual understanding.
COGNITIVE LEARNING
4] I can demonstrate insight and knowledge when describing and critically evaluating my own work, the work of peers, artists, craftspeople, and designers.

5] I can effectively evaluate the work of others, commenting on the use of media, technique and style in a way that encourages the artistic development of others.

6] I can evaluate contemporary art, commenting on the different ways that visual elements and themes are used.

9] I can discuss some of the principles of minimalist and conceptual art and I am aware how these relate to developments in music and literature.



Learning Area Outcome: I can interpret, communicate and present ideas, problems and arguments in a number of visual modes; ​I can apply my understanding of the properties of media and of techniques to specific tasks and purposes that will benefit user groups and audiences.

Subject Focus: Demonstrating understanding of Materials, Techniques, Skills, Media and Aesthetic Qualities.

1] I can demonstrate an insightful understanding of recording through the use of specific techniques and media. I can do this through a wide range of activities.
2] I can confidently select the appropriate medium, materials and tools in order to realise my personal ideas and intentions or solve a design brief. 
3] I can think imaginatively and laterally to solve problems.
COGNITIVE
4] I can demonstrate confidence and skill using a range of media, materials, tools and processes.
PRACTICAL
5]  I can use media with control and assurance and demonstrate personal innovation and risk-taking in my choice and use of media. 
6] I am able to use visual elements with skill and sensitivity, expressing qualities and relationships, in order to convey information and express feelings, thoughts and ideas in visual terms.
7] I am able to arrange and organise my work coherently. I demonstrate high levels of autonomy in making appropriate alterations and modifications to realise my intentions.

8] I can demonstrate a deeper artistic understanding of the way that artists and designers work with depictions of space.



Learning Area Outcome: I understand the capacity of visual arts to address moral, ethical, social and political issues relevant to Malta and the wider world. I appreciate that the arts can be challenging and provide a space for addressing social difference as well as facilitating social and cultural cohesion; ​I understand that imaginative activity can be harnessed to produce outcomes that contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of Malta and the wider world; I know how to learn and update my knowledge of the arts.

Subject Focus: Art in Context.

1. I can recognise the changing role of art and how the global economy has driven art production into the 21st Century.LEARNING TO KNOW
2. I can discuss what kind of visual art is being produced in Malta today and comment on how and why art has been related to national identity.
3. I can explore a particular genre of art in depth, making links between the historical, moral, ethical, social and political context of the art and the ways in which audiences experience the art in Malta and in the wider world.

4. I can demonstrate my understanding of how values and points of view are included or excluded and how digital media can influence beliefs and behaviours.

5. I can demonstrate my knowledge of interculturalism and globalisation. I can discuss how this is affecting contemporary art and cultural life in Malta, Europe and the wider world.

6. I can position my artwork in relation to art produced and exhibited in Europe and globally.
7.  I can relate how artists have dealt with environmental, social or economic issues to my own work.
8. I understand how artists have steered culture and how culture steers artists. I can relate this to the role of artists and designers in today’s economic, social and cultural life in Malta and beyond.
